Our Personal Interests
Below is a collection of narrative systems and combat systems from other games that we have a personal vested interest in, whether it be trying to make or having on our portfolio, that are within our realm of capabilities in which we could develop together.
Narrative
- Wyldermyth
- A procedurally generated storytelling structure that takes into account the players characters and builds to decide on the character arc each player character should go down and mixes this with an overarching narrative in which dire consequences can occur. I love this system in motion but I have no idea how to deal with procedural generation, it's a wittle scawy.
- Reigns & Hades
- Reigns and hades have a very similar approach to narrative design. There are basic storylines/arcs for the player to take part in, but when certain events happen or decisions are made, newer arcs and storylines are added into the randomly generated mix of whatever storylines will appear on the players next run. If a player has recently completed an arc/storyline and a follow up storyline is added into the mix then that newer follow up storyline is given a higher priority on the ladder and will have a higher chance of appearing next. Mix this with a huge script for both games and 30+ storylines and what you have is a recipe for a player focused randomly generated storytelling design structure built around encouraging multiple runs → A narrative focused roguelike.
Combat System
- Darkest Dungeon
- ****This is the game that made me appreciate JRPGs! It took a combat system known for it's complex technicalities and numerical focus and turned it into a simplified "meaning machine". The combat system is used to enhance the feeling of dread and mental instability of the characters. It's also heavily focused on crowd control and spatial positions rather than "higher or lower numbers", my favourite type of combat. - Nicola
